Exhibition in a box at Peckham Levels

Inspired by our pop-up display, students started their own archive and brought Victorian photographs to life with colour and symbols.

Autograph's pop-up archive display is at Peckham Levels, and students from Harris Girls' Academy East Dulwich have been creatively engaging with these remarkable images.

The Exhibition in a Box features 30 image panels, reproduced from rare 19th century photographs portraying people of African, Caribbean and South Asian descent during the Victorian era in Britain. It's one of our popular Archive Resources. 

English students reimagined the stories behind the people in the images, and thought of questions they would like to ask. Using this as inspiration, students then interviewed people living in Peckham to start a Peckham archive.

Photography students at the Academy also researched the images, and brought the images to life through colour and symbols in a workshop with artist Ben Nugent.
